Do you own or borrow boats, canoes or kayaks? - 22-06-2012
As part of Scouting's culture of safety, there are a few things that those Groups who own or borrow boats, canoes or kayaks need to be aware of.
Rule 9.46 of Policy, Organisation and Rules states:
- All boats owned by or on long term loan to a Member or unit of the Movement should display an Identification Boat Sticker.
- All such boats operating on British Waterways Board controlled rivers must display this Identification Boat Sticker.
- All boats should have adequate marine insurance cover.
- Leaders must ensure that all craft are maintained in a serviceable condition, inspected and tested every three years in accordance with Region arrangements and self-assessed every year.
At a recent meeting of the Regional Executive Committee, Clyde Region approved local arrangements to support Groups & Districts to comply with the fourth bullet point above.
Any Group or District who has craft that need to be inspected should contact Colin Lamont, our Regional Adviser (Activities) with details of what craft they have and ask him to arrange for an inspection.
The Region has appointed a number of boat examiners who through Colin, will carry out the required inspections, ensure that appropriate identification stickers are on all craft and then return a register confirming craft inspection to Colin, who will retain a copy for our records and supply a copy to the Group or District.
Thereafter, you require to have these inspections re-done, every 3 years.
