Cub Scouts from the 35th Glasgow recently had a special visit from Councillor Tony Buchanan at East Renfrewshire Council to help them complete their Scottish Cub Challenge badge.
During his visit, the Cubs showed Councillor Buchanan little mercy when they quizzed him on what East Renfrewshire Council were doing for the community to promote climate change and improve the environment. The Cubs had all been asked to think of several questions the week before his visit.
Nathan Clark asked why the council had cut down trees on Capelrig Road in Crookfur as he thought it was important that they had trees in the community. Cllr Buchanan replied by explaining that the certain types of trees cut down only have a life span of roughly 70 years and then they die off. The trees in question had also become hazardous so they were taken away but Cllr Buchanan reassured the Cubs that they would allow the ground to settle and then plant new trees.
Louis Mack asked why there were not more dog bins in Newton Mearns. Cllr Buchanan explained that dog bins are very expensive for the Council to buy but people could use the normal litter bins. Cllr Buchanan did say he would look into getting more rubbish bins installed in Newton Mearns for Louis. Following on from this all the Cubs highlighted that there is always rubbish lying at the Harvie Avenue shops as the bins are always full and Cllr Buchanan said he would personally check this out and if needed get more bins ordered for the shops.
The Cubs had one final task for the night before Cllr Buchanan left; a photo! Lewis Morgan brought his camera for the group photo as the next stage of our Scottish Cub Challenge badge was to get the pack into the local media. Once the photo was taken we thanked Cllr Buchanan for his visit and the Cubs got to work on writing a short story about the night.
Now all that is left to do is get our story and picture of the night published and it has been for the first on this website!
Thanks to Jennifer McAskill at the 35th Glasgow for the story and pictures.
